About Filipino Martial Arts

FB35_FMA_LogoThe Filipino martial arts in their present form represent everything that characterizes a modern and effective martial art. All techniques and movement patterns are derived from the use of stick and blade weapons and can be transferred directly to your own “body weapons” (elbows, knees, hands) or any everyday objects (umbrella, pen, keychain, etc.).

This approach distinguishes Filipino martial arts from other established styles (such as Karate, Judo, Tae-Kwon-Do), in which the use of a “weapon” is either not taught at all or only at an advanced level.

For the efficient use of Filipino martial arts, it is less a question of strength, agility and endurance, but rather of technique, sense of distance and coordination. This makes our martial art very suitable for everyday life and above all for every age and sex learnable and applicable.

We therefore consciously speak of traditional martial arts in order to distinguish ourselves from competitive martial arts / combat sports. We are teaching traditional martial arts; there is no participation in sporting competitions.

Our training is based on the motto “martial arts, body training, self-defense”. Our goal is to help to develop the abilities of each individual member according to his/her possibilities. Any physical limitations are of course taken into consideration. Due to the handling of weapons, however, we require a minimum age of 16 years for regular training. For young people aged 12 to 16 years we have developed Kali4YOUth especially.

But even if the training lessons take place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the suitability for everyday use is always in the foreground during our training: Because the Filipino martial arts have kept their seriousness and applicableness to this day.

The many positive health effects of training in Filipino martial arts should also be emphasized:

  • Avoidance of unhealthy overstraining of the body through the individual responsibility during the work-out phases of the training
  • Excellent fall prevention due to the sophisticated and versatile foot work
  • Enhancing the ability to concentrate thanks to the complex movement patterns
  • Development of one’s own body perception and coordination skills, since the weaker half of the body (e.g. the left hand in right-handed people) is also used in a variety of ways

Have we aroused your interest? Then you are invited to attend one of our training sessions and discover the fascination and effectiveness of Filipino martial arts for yourself!

Our training courses

Modern Arnis (from 16 years)

FB35_MA_LogoThe development of the “modern” Arnis in its present form can be traced back to the Presas family, especially the two brothers Remy and Ernesto Presas. Grandmaster Remy Presas trained various classical styles with various masters in the Philippines and developed the concepts of Modern Arnis from his experiences.

One of the basic concepts of Modern Arnis is the consistent transferability of techniques: Rattan sticks are used in training, but they do not form a separate unit, they are rather to be understood as an extension of the arms. This means that the Arnis techniques learned can be immediately transferred to any (everyday) objects (such as umbrellas, newspapers, keys or ballpoint pens) as well as to the empty-hands.

Pekiti-Tirsia Kali (from 16 years)

FB35_PTK_LogoPekiti-Tirsia Kali is one of the most popular styles of Filipino martial arts. Grand Tuhon Leo Tortal Gaje is the style custodian and grandmaster of this system.

What makes this system special is the sophisticated foot work, as well as the application of the direct counter-attack to the defense. All techniques and movement patterns are derived from the use of blade weapons (machete, knife) and can be transferred to the body weapons (elbow, knee, hand).

Due to its strong practical relevance, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali has successfully established and proven itself with security forces, e.g. police and military.

Our training is done in close cooperation with and support by Mandala Johannes Renninghoff. As part of this cooperation we are affiliated with the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Tactical Association (PTTA) and maintain regular contact with the American instructor Tuhon Jared Wihongi.

Kali4YOUth (12 to 16 years)

The Kali4YOUth is a training of Filipino martial arts especially designed for young people aged 12 to 16 years.

The young people are trained in the handling of the rattan sticks as well as in the empty-hand techniques.

This is not only a perfect and age-appropriate entry into the fascinating world of Filipino martial arts, but also a very effective self-defense method for this age group.

The training is very coordination-promoting, strengthens the self-confidence and is a lot of fun! It also provides a good contrast to long periods of sitting at school and at the desk.

Seminars & Workshops

On request, our team is also available for seminars and workshops.

We have developed various concepts for workshops on self-assertion and self-defense, which take into account the requirements of different age groups (children, young people, adults) as well as professional target groups (e.g. rescue forces). We are also happy to respond to individual wishes and requirements.

Further information about our seminars & workshops can be obtained from Heiko Dernedde.

New Media & Social Networks

Our department is also represented in the so-called new media and social networks such as Facebook and YouTube. Members, friends, clubs and other interested parties can follow our activities and network with us.
